ブラウン曲が9曲、スティーヴ・ポーカロの「Human Nature」、ドナルド・ブラウンの「The Biscuit Man」、Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newleyの「(I've Got a) Golden Ticket」で全12曲。

Keith Brown is the son of Donald Brown, a jazz pianist who used to play for Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers at the same time with Marsalis Brothers.  This album is his second album as the leader.  I have reviewed his first album, too.  You could refer, "Keith Brown / Sweet & Lovely(2011)"'.  I feel so lucky that I was able to get this copy with the autographs of all the musicians directly from the US prior to the Japan release.

The drummer of his previous work was Marcus Gilmore, but this time it’s Terreon Gully.  That makes me so tempted to listen.   I reviewed his recent work in  ‘Joe Locke / Love Is a Pendulum(2015)’ and his drumming was fantastic.  This time, he is not only a drummer but also a co-producer along with Brown.   It makes me appreciate hearing how capable he is.  Other members are Greg tardy, Kenneth Whalum III, a nephew of Kirk Whalum, whom I reviewed only one number in ‘ Christian Scott / Christian aTunde Adjuah(2012)’, Mike Seal, whom I assume it’s the same Mike I reviewed in ‘Jeff Sipe Trio / with Mike Seal & Taylor Lee(2014)’.   I don’t know the rest of the band members.

The 12-song album consists of 9 songs by Brown, "Human Nature" by Steve Porcaro,  "The Biscuit Man" by Donald Brown and  "(I've Got a) Golden Ticket" by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.   Four of the songs are dedicated to his wife, Tamara Brown, Jamel Mitchell and Kenny Kirkland.

He plays speedy like Eldar Djangirov, ‘Eldar Djangirov Trio / Breakthrough (2013)’.  The overall piano style has elements of many different artists like his previous album.  His phrasing like Chick Corea, but not too much like Herbie Hancok and spiced with something like Kirkland is impressive.  The overall impression of the album is more fusion because he uses more electric bass, sometimes he plays synthesizer along with acoustic piano, Mike Seal who is a fusion guitarist is in the band and Gully who is good in playing 16 beat drums is one of the producers.  Musically, fusion color is strong, but their performance is not weak at all.

His hard playing style which relates to Corea’s ‘Chick Corea / The Vigil(2013)’ sounds really good.   It is due to Brown’s overall very sensible piano playing as well as Gully who can drum in many different ways using the most updated beats.  Seal is also noteworthy for its brilliant playing.  The 3 sax players and Vance Thompson who plays flugelhorn in one number were as strong as I expected.  Maybe he wanted them to play just melody, although each of them has a solo depending on the number.  Meanwhile, the theme ensemble including Seal on the 4th track, "Capt'n Kirk" is cool.  Clint Mullican, the bassist who plays mainly electric bass matches the melody well.  Although, it feels like the first track, ‘4G’ which he plays upright bass, is slightly pitchy.  Tamara’s vocal is not bad for a person like me who does not like to listen to vocal pieces since her scat is used effectively like an instrument like Gretchen Parlato or Thana Alexa’s contemporary jazz style.  I like all the tracks, but most of all, I like the 11th track, ‘The Biscuit Man’ the best.

He changed the style quite bit comparing to his last album and he also changes his playing style according to the melody.  That may mean that he is capable of playing in many different styles.  That may make it not so clear what he really is aiming for at the same time.  However, the band as a whole is exciting, I can’t wish for more at this time.  The recording done by Ralph Caciurri is favorable since instruments other than piano and drums are somewhat set back and it focuses on the points you want to hear clearly to make it likable.
